Time to talk about this delicious but easy dog birthday cake recipe that I made last month and was a hit at the dog park. If you’re anything like me, your dog’s birthday is basically a national holiday in your household.
Last month, a friend and I went full dog-mom mode and and baked a cake for her Pomeranian Minnie’s 3rd birthday. That tiny fluffbal was actually doing zoomies around her cake at the dog park while all the other pups watched with major FOMO.
Take a look at this cake. It looks so beautiful with the blueberries and sprinkles over a beautiful frosting that you’d think it’s one of those projects that will take you the whole afternoon to make.
The truth is it’s one of the easiest and simplest dog cakes I’ve made!

Why This Homemade Dog Birthday Cake Is Healthy
This sweet potato and oat flour combo isn’t just delicious. It’s packed with fiber that’s gentle on your dog’s digestive system.
Sweet potatoes bring beta-carotene and vitamins A, C, and B6 to support your dog’s vision, immune system, and overall health.
The coconut oil offers those fatty acids that can help with skin health (goodbye, random dry patches!).
Plus, when you make a homemade dog birthday cake, you’re skipping all the preservatives, artificial colors, and questionable ingredients that nobody can pronounce.
Sweet Potato Pumpkin Spice Dog Birthday Cake Recipe
This cake swaps traditional pumpkin for sweet potato, and honestly? Game changer. It’s got that gorgeous orange color that makes for killer Instagram photos, and dogs seem to go absolutely bonkers for it.
Here’s my not-so-secret recipe for this delicious dog birthday sweet potato and pumpkin spice cake:

Ingredients:
For the dog birthday cake:
- 2 cups oat flour (just blitz some rolled oats in your food processor—so much cheaper!)
- 1 cup mashed sweet potato (I roast mine the night before because the flavor gets deeper)
- 1/4 cup pumpkin pie spice (the same stuff you put in your fall lattes, but keep it dog-safe)
- 1/4 cup coconut oil (melted and slightly cooled so you don’t scramble your eggs)
- 1/3 cup honey (optional, but my dog gives me those eyes when I try to skip it)
- 2 eggs (room temperature works best)
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 cup water or unsweetened almond milk
For the creamy frosting:
- 2 cups cottage cheese (drain it well or you’ll have a soggy cake situation)
- 2 tablespoons honey
- A few blueberries for decoration (my dog picks these off first, every time)
- Dog sprinkles (optional)
How to Actually Make This Easy and Simple Dog Birthday Cake
I’m not going to pretend this is a complex culinary masterpiece. This dog birthday cake recipe is so easy and simple to make. If I can make it while simultaneously keeping my dog from stealing ingredients, you can too!
- Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line a 6-inch cake pan with parchment paper (or just spray the heck out of it with cooking spray).
- Mix the oat flour, pumpkin pie spice, and baking soda in a bowl.
- In another bowl, whisk together the sweet potato, coconut oil, honey, eggs, and water. It’ll look a bit like baby food, but trust the process.
- Combine wet and dry ingredients. The batter will be thick—don’t panic.
- Pour (or more realistically, scoop) the batter into your pan and smooth it out. Bake for 25-30 minutes. You’ll know it’s done when your kitchen smells amazing and a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let that baby cool completely. I mean it—completely. Hot cake + frosting = disaster. I’ve learned this the hard way so you don’t have to.
- For the frosting, blend that drained cottage cheese until it’s smooth as silk, then stir in honey. Spread it all over your cooled cake with zero shame.
- Add some blueberries and sprinkles on top and arrange them in the shape of a bone if you’re feeling fancy. You can also add sprinkles around the sides of the cake. Your dog won’t appreciate the aesthetic, but your dog’s pics with the cake will look extremely cute!
Don’t forget to share your masterpiece in an instagram dog birthday story!

Getting Creative (Because Basic DIY Dog Cakes Are So Last Year)
Once you’ve mastered the base recipe, why not get a little wild?
- Use bone-shaped pans and watch your dog’s actual brain short-circuit with joy (ok, slight exaggeration but it looks so cute!)
- Arrange the bluberries and sprinkles in the shape of your dog’s initial.
- Go for a layer cake if you’re feeling ambitious (and your dog has friends coming over)
- Add a tiny drop of natural food coloring to the frosting if you want to match your dog’s birthday bandana
- Top with fresh berries in the shape of your dog’s initial (yes, I’ve done this, no regrets)
True story: The first time I tried making a dog birthday cake, I was so nervous about getting it perfect that I accidentally dropped an entire egg (shell and all) into the batter. My kitchen looked like a crime scene, and I nearly gave up. Now I bake these with one hand while scrolling TikTok with the other. Growth!
Not in the Mood For this Sweet Potato Pumpkin Cake Recipe?
This isn’t my first dog cake rodeo! If you’re looking for alternatives to this sweet potato version, check out my other birthday cake recipes that my dog has personally taste-tested and approved:
- Banana Peanut Butter Cake with peanut butter Greek yogurt frosting (my dog’s personal favorite)

And because I clearly have too much time on my hands, I’ve also put together guides for dog birthday party ideas and favors for your dog birthday party that won’t end up in the trash.

“I Don’t Have Time For This” Version
Look, sometimes life happens and you forgot your dog’s birthday until the actual day (we’ve all been there). In those emergency situations, my no-bake oat and banana dog treats can be whipped up in about 10 minutes. Your dog won’t know the difference, I promise.
Cake Ideas For The Tiny Dogs In Our Lives
If you’re the human to a small dog like Minnie, some practical advice:
- Use a muffin tin instead of a cake pan—portion control is real, even for dogs
- Freeze half for later (your dog doesn’t understand leftovers anyway)
- Bring mini versions to share at the dog park (instant popularity for both you and your pup)
When Sarah and I made this for Minnie’s party, we actually created one “display cake” for photos and several mini cupcakes for all the dogs. The cake was such a hit that this massive Bernese Mountain Dog somehow managed to sneak a second helping when everyone was busy taking photos. The look on his face when he got caught was worth the extra cleanup!
Final Thoughts From One Dog Parent to Another
Whether this is your first time baking for your dog or you’re basically running an underground dog bakery from your kitchen, remember that the point isn’t perfection, but seeing that tail wag while presenting them with their very own cake.
