Cat Names: 1,000+ Ideas for Every Kitty

The perfect cat name can sometimes come as an instinct — almost out of the blue. But other times, finding the right one is surprisingly hard!

I once found four abandoned kittens in Bali, and when I brought them to a rescue center they asked me to name them on the spot. It doesn’t sound so difficult… until you realize your mind goes completely blank. Having a list like this at hand would have been a lifesaver!

Over time, I’ve collected 1,000+ cat name ideas from everywhere — books, movies, colors, even food (because who wouldn’t smile at a cat named Mochi?). Here are some of the best.

Cat Naming Tips: Keep It Short & Sweet

    • Short works best. Research shows cats respond more reliably to names that are one or two syllables. Think “Milo” or “Luna” rather than something long like “Maximillian” (but you can still choose a long name and have a cute short nickname as well).
    • Vowel endings help. Cats often react well to names ending in bright sounds like “-ee” (Kitty, Smokey, Nori) or other open vowels like “a” and “o” (Luna, Bella, Milo).
    • Patter of sounds are important. In my experience, cats pick up not just on the name but the pattern of sound you use when calling them. I could say almost any word in the same tone, and my cat would still come running (ok, “running” is an exaggeration).
