Two Ways to Make Exfoliating Soap
1. Melt-and-Pour Soap (Best for Beginners)
This is the quickest and easiest method, and no lye is required. Your soaps will be ready in just a few hours.
2. Cold Process (More Advanced)
Here, the soap is made completely from scratch. It’s fully customizable and requires curing time.
Method 1: Melt-and-Pour Exfoliating Soap
Instructions:
Get a soap base. You can find soap bases at craft stores, specialty soap-making shops, or online. They’re typically sold in 1-pound or larger blocks, which you simply cut into smaller pieces before melting.
After melting, let it cool slightly. Add the exfoliant (1–2 tbsp per pound), then the fragrance (optional). Pour into molds, let it harden, and unmold.
Example: Coffee Exfoliating Soap
For this simple recipe, you’ll need a melt-and-pour soap base, about one tablespoon of dried coffee grounds, and optionally a few drops of fragrance oil if you’d like to enhance the scent.

Start by cutting the soap base into small cubes and melting it slowly in the microwave or using a double boiler. Once it has fully melted, allow it to cool slightly so the coffee grounds don’t sink to the bottom.

Next, stir in the dried coffee grounds, making sure they are evenly distributed throughout the mixture. If you’re using fragrance oil, add it at this stage and mix well.

Carefully pour the mixture into your molds and gently tap them to remove any air bubbles. Let the soap sit at room temperature until it has completely hardened, which usually takes a couple of hours. Once firm, unmold your soap and it’s ready to use.

This exfoliating soap is especially great for hands and body, helping to remove dead skin cells while leaving your skin feeling smooth, clean, and refreshed.
Method 2: Cold Process Soap
Instructions:
Begin by carefully preparing the lye solution, slowly adding the lye to distilled water in a well-ventilated area and allowing it to cool. While the lye solution is cooling, melt and combine your chosen oils and butters until fully liquid and well blended.

Once both the lye solution and the oils have cooled to similar temperatures, gently pour the lye solution into the oils. Use a stick blender to mix until the mixture reaches “trace,” meaning it thickens to a light pudding-like consistency.

At this point, add your chosen exfoliant and stir it in evenly. Then pour the soap mixture into your mold, smoothing the top if needed.

Allow the soap to sit undisturbed for 24–48 hours until it hardens enough to unmold. After removing it from the mold, let the bars cure in a dry, well-ventilated space for 4–6 weeks. This curing time allows the soap to fully harden and become safe and gentle to use.
Example: Oatmeal Milk & Honey Soap
This classic recipe combines gentle exfoliation with deep nourishment, making it a favorite for anyone with delicate or sensitive skin. The key exfoliant in this soap is finely ground oatmeal, which helps softly remove dead skin cells without causing irritation.
In addition to exfoliating, oatmeal is known for its soothing properties, while milk adds extra creaminess and hydration. A touch of honey helps lock in moisture, leaving the skin feeling soft, calm, and refreshed after each use.

This soap is especially well suited for sensitive or dry skin types, as it provides a mild, comforting cleanse rather than a harsh scrub. It’s a great everyday bar if you want light exfoliation with a nourishing, skin-friendly feel.
Best Natural Exfoliants
Choosing the right exfoliant is key to creating a soap that feels good on your skin and works for your needs. Not all exfoliants are the same—some are very gentle and suitable for daily use, while others provide a deeper scrub and are better for tougher areas like feet or elbows.
Gentle exfoliants, such as oatmeal, rice flour, and clay, are perfect for sensitive or delicate skin. They provide a soft, barely-there exfoliation that helps smooth the skin without causing irritation. These are ideal for facial soaps or for anyone who prefers a mild, soothing cleanse.

Medium exfoliants, including sugar, coffee grounds, and seeds, offer a more noticeable scrub while still being safe for regular use on the body. They help remove dead skin more effectively and leave your skin feeling refreshed and polished. These are great for everyday body soaps.

Strong exfoliants, like salt, pumice, and walnut shell powder, provide a deeper, more intense exfoliation. They’re best used for rough areas such as heels, elbows, or knees rather than the face. These ingredients can be very effective, but should be used carefully to avoid over-exfoliating the skin.

By choosing the right level of exfoliation, you can customize your homemade soap to be as gentle or as invigorating as you like.
