10 Creative and Easy Pipe Cleaner Valentine Crafts for Kids

Pipe cleaner Valentine crafts are ideal because they are adaptable, forgiving, and also quite hard to fail at. Even very little ones can do them (under supervision of course). Moreover, the clean-up is practically nothing, which is always a plus!

Over the years, I have experimented with lots of Valentine’s art and craft ideas, and for some reason, pipe cleaners have become my first choice.

They are cheap, you can get them from any craft shop or dollar store, and they are much less messy than projects using paint or glue. Believe me, after you’ve cleaned up glitter from your carpet for the third time, you will be so grateful for this!

Materials You’ll Need

Before we get into the adorable pipe cleaner crafts, here is what you should take:

  • Pipe cleaners in Valentine colors (red, pink, white, purple)
  • Scissors (keep these in adult hands for younger kids)
  • Optional: pony beads, googly eyes, small pom poms
  • Optional: cardstock or construction paper for cards
  • Optional: hot glue gun (for extra secure attachments)

1. Easy Pipe Cleaner Heart

This is the most basic of all pipe cleaner crafts easy enough for even toddlers to try with help.

Pipe cleaner heart.

How to make it:

  1. Take one red or pink pipe cleaner
  2. Bend it in half to find the center
  3. Curl each end inward to form the top curves of the heart
  4. Twist the bottom ends together to create the point
  5. Adjust the shape until it looks heart-like

You can make these into garlands by linking several together, or attach them to Valentine’s cards. They also make adorable bookmarks if you leave the bottom a bit longer!

2. Heart Wand or Ring

This is one of the simple pipe cleaner crafts for kids that also serves as a toy, so you will get extra play value once the craft time is over.

  1. Make a pipe cleaner heart using the instructions above
  2. Twist a second pipe cleaner around the bottom of the heart to create a long handle

For a ring:

  1. Make a tiny heart by wrapping pipe cleaner around something small like a marker cap
  2. Attach it to another pipe cleaner
  3. Wrap that pipe cleaner around your child’s finger to size it, then twist to secure
  4. Trim any excess

3. Pipe Cleaner Flower Bouquet

These pipe cleaner crafts flower creations are ridiculously cute, and they are wonderful little gifts for grandparents or teachers. Moreover, unlike real flowers, these won’t die in your scorching vehicle before you get to the school drop-off.

Materials needed:

  • 2-3 pipe cleaners per flower (one color for petals, green for stem)
  • Small buttons or pom poms for centers (optional)

How to make it:

  1. Take a pink or red pipe cleaner and wrap it tightly around your finger to create a small spiral
  2. Slide it off your finger – this becomes one petal
  3. Make 5-6 of these spirals along the same pipe cleaner, leaving a bit of space between each
  4. After creating your spirals, carefully fan them out to form a flower shape
  5. Then twist the ends together underneath to secure it
  6. Twist the ends together underneath to secure
  7. Take a green pipe cleaner and twist it around the base of your flower for the stem
  8. You can add leaves by folding small sections of another green pipe cleaner and attaching them to the stem

These are probably my favorite pipe cleaner crafts for kids because they look impressive but are actually pretty forgiving if the shapes aren’t perfect.

4. Cupid’s Arrow

This Valentine’s Day craft is great for young kids, but it’s also fun for slightly older ones who can handle a bit more detail.

Tips from One Mom to Another

For younger kids: Pre-bend some of the shapes for them and let them do the final tweaking. It keeps frustration low and success high.

Bead bonus: Adding the processing of putting pony beads on pipe cleaners before making them into a shape, not only adds but also improves the child’s fine motor skills.

Safety first: .Always be on the lookout for sharp ends post cutting. I always fold them over or tuck them into the design. Hot glue can also cap sharp ends if needed.

Color mixing: Let your imagination run free and do not restrict yourself to red and pink only! Pipe cleaners in the colors of purple, white, and even mixed color look cheerful and attractive on Valentine’s Day.

Making It Educational

If you want to sneak in some learning with these pipe cleaner crafts easy activities, try:

  • Counting: “How many hearts are in your caterpillar?”
  • Patterns: Alternate colors when making garlands
  • Following directions: Great for listening skills
  • Fine motor development: The whole process of twisting and bending is a lot of fun and very beneficial for the little hands.

Classroom Valentines Idea

If you are looking for non-candy valentines craft ideas for your child’s class party, then these pipe cleaner crafts for kids will work out just fine! It would be wonderful to make simple hearts or flowers, place them on a piece of cardstock with the message “You make my heart twist!” or “Our friendship is blossoming!”

Display Ideas

Once all these cute creations are done, here’s how you can use them as decorations:

  • String hearts together for a garland across a doorway
  • Put flowers in a small vase as a centerpiece
  • Attach them to cards for grandparents
  • Use them as napkin rings for a Valentine’s dinner
  • Create a mobile by hanging them from a wire hanger
  • Pin them to a cork board for a Valentine’s display
